Der auf den Färöer-Inseln geborene und in Reykjavík ansässige Produzent Janus Rasmussen hat konsequent einen eleganten Sound verfeinert, der klangliche Präzision mit emotionaler Tiefe verbindet. In den vergangenen zehn Jahren hat er sich durch genreübergreifende Kollaborationen ein vielseitiges Werk als Produzent, Songwriter, Musiker und Mixing-Engineer aufgebaut.
Am bekanntesten als eine Hälfte von KIASMOS an der Seite von Ólafur Arnalds, hat Janus als Solokünstler Kompositionen geschaffen, die fesselndes Sounddesign, raffinierte melodische Veränderungen und rhythmischen Antrieb in Balance halten – geprägt von seiner vielfältigen musikalischen Inspiration und seinen Studioexperimenten. Diese Erfahrungen haben eine kreative Identität geformt, die nun in seinem bislang ambitioniertesten Solo-Projekt „Inert“ deutlich zum Ausdruck kommt.
Das Album markiert einen mutigen Schritt nach vorn und erforscht thematisch das Loslösen von Trägheit durch das Annehmen kreativer Freiheit. In seiner neuen Arbeit setzt Janus mehr denn je seine eigene Stimme ein, die er nahtlos in komplexe elektronische Strukturen einwebt. Dabei erweitert er seinen Sound in neue Bereiche, ohne die subtile Zurückhaltung zu verlieren, die seine bisherigen Werke geprägt hat. Inspiriert vom Spektrum der elektronischen Tanzmusik spiegelt „Inert“ ein erneuertes Gefühl von Dynamik, Verletzlichkeit und Abenteuerlust wider.
Über das gesamte Album hinweg zeigt Janus eine beeindruckende stilistische Bandbreite: verträumter Downtempo, euphorische Dancefloor-Momente, experimentelle Beats, postklassisches Klavierspiel und vielschichtige Klangtexturen verschmelzen miteinander. All das wird mit einer zugänglichen Pop-Sensibilität präsentiert und immer wieder von seinem sanften, fast engelhaften Gesang durchzogen, während die Stile fließend ineinander übergehen.
Nach der hypnotischen, oszillierenden Sogwirkung von „Murk“ und dem hellen, zugleich melancholischen „Drain“ erweist sich „Fumes“ als klanglicher Höhepunkt des Albums – sein unmittelbarster und ungefilterster Moment. Mit rastloser Energie, getragen von einer pulsierenden Bassline und anschwellenden Synthesizern, steigert sich der Track zu einer hymnischen Dimension. Janus beschreibt ihn so:
„‚Fumes‘ entstand fast aus dem Nichts. Es wurde schnell geschrieben, ohne viel Nachdenken – einfach einem Impuls folgend. Eine ruhelose Energie durchzieht den Track, getragen von einer beharrlichen Bassline und einem sich wiederholenden, beinahe absurden Text, der die Unruhe des Songs widerspiegelt. Ich wollte, dass er direkt und ungefiltert wirkt, sogar leicht konfrontativ. Er bewegt sich in einem anderen Raum als meine bisherigen Arbeiten, was ihn für mich zu einem wichtigen Schritt macht.“
An anderer Stelle erzeugt der tiefe 2-Step-Groove von „Doom“ eine klagende, herbstliche Stimmung, während „Bones“ wie Glut im Dunkeln treibt und Wellen kosmischer Klangschichten übereinanderlegt. „Sift“ beschließt diesen Abschnitt mit einer melancholischen Verbindung aus Synthesizer und Klavier, die direkt ins Herz geht. Im experimentelleren Bereich liefert „Tomb“ einen verspielten Broken-Beat-Groove, bevor er in die düstere Größe von „Evil“ übergeht. Die Dynamik kehrt mit dem antreibenden, von knurrendem Bass und sanften Vocals getragenen „Blame“ zurück und kulminiert schließlich im epischen, festivalreifen Finale von „Spiraling“.
